Its true origin lies deep in the heart of Ecuador, where the art of weaving these elegant, breathable hats has been passed down for generations.

Most people are surprised to learn that the Panama Hat has nothing to do with Panama.

The Misnamed Icon

So, why the name?

During the early 20th century, when the Panama Canal was under construction, workers and visiting dignitaries (including U.S. President Theodore Roosevelt) wore these straw hats to cope with the heat. These hats had been shipped from Ecuador to Panama, and so the name stuck: wrongly.

But Ecuador remained in the shadows while the world mistakenly gave Panama the credit.

Born in the Highlands and Coast of Ecuador

Authentic Panama hats are crafted in Montecristi, Cuenca, and other artisan villages in Ecuador.

They’re woven using fibers from the Carludovica Palmata, also known as the toquilla palm. The harvesting and weaving process can take days or even months, depending on the fineness of the weave.

Each hat is a piece of living history, created by hand with immense patience and care.

A Tradition Passed Down Through Generations

Toquilla straw weaving has been part of Ecuadorian life for centuries.

Mothers teach daughters. Grandfathers teach sons. It’s a ritual of identity — and in 2012, UNESCO declared it an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

These hats aren’t just accessories; they’re a symbol of Ecuador’s craftsmanship and pride.

A Modern Renaissance

Today, Panama hats are making a comeback in fashion, weddings, beachwear, and sustainable luxury markets.

People are once again discovering their lightweight comfort, stylish design, and ethical background.

Whether you’re dressing up for a summer event or traveling light, a handmade toquilla straw hat is more than a choice — it’s a statement.
